Sambar Sadam

Ingredients

Raw rice 1 cup

Tur Dal 1/2 Cup
Mixed vegetables (Carrots, brinjal, green peas, turnips,potatoes ) 1 and 1/2 cups
Small onions 1/2 cup
Sambar powder 1and 1/2 tablespoonful
Coriander powder 1/2 tablespoon
tamarind paste 2 teaspoon
A little asafotida
Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

Method

Soak the Tur dal in 1 and 1/2 cup water in the pressure cooker for half an hour.
Meanwhile chop the vegetables.
Wash the rice and mix with the soaked dal in the pressure cooker.
Add vegetables, sambar powder, coriander powder, turmeric, tamarind paste, salt.
Add 3 more cups of water in the pressure cooker.
Bring to full pressure.Reduce heat and cook for 5 minutes. Turn off heat and leave it for another 10 minutes. Open the cooker.Add the chopped coriander leaves.
Fry 1/2 teaspoon mustard in 3 tablespoons oil and add to the rice. You may add 1 tablespoon of ghee for taste.
The sadam will be a little watery when hot but will thicken when cool.Increase the amount of water if you feel the sadam is too thick after cooling.
